The thermometers may be reading sub-zero temperatures outside, but it does give you the perfect excuse to sit by this cozy fireplace inside!
We recently had the pleasure of renovating a family room for a client! Before we began, it was very similar to many Michigan family rooms built in the 1970's with wood paneling, a large brick wall at the fireplace, and stained wood beams and trim.
It had a warm and cozy feel, but our clients were ready for a change and wanted to develop a more traditional style family room complete with a new fireplace mantel and hearth. We were happy to help! So, we went to work removing the wood paneling and brick wall to make way for new drywall and crown molding. The transformation of a room from removing wood paneling and a massive brick fireplace to dry-walling, building a smaller, updated fireplace, and updating trim is incredible!
Adding a nice bright white shiny crown molding offers a nice finish to most rooms and is a simple way to significantly enhance the look and feel of a room. We designed and developed a custom chunky crown molding for the homeowner consistent with the traditional style of the re-design for the room.
We were also asked to design a series of beams with the same layout as the original, but with a less heavy and pronounced look. We came up with a low-profile beam design that keeps the beams tighter to the ceiling.
As usual, we used top grade paint on the walls and trim. We like to use a flatter paint on the walls and a higher sheen (semi-gloss) on the trim to make the trim pop! The higher the sheen (more glossy), the easier the surface is to clean. The homeowners regularly have small children in their home and wanted to make sure all of the painted surfaces were very washable. We decided to use O'leary ceramic coat paint for the walls which offers the best of both worlds (very washable finish in a flatter sheen). We used O'leary Microspec paint on the trim, which is a top grade paint and great for higher sheen applications.
The nicest feature in the room in our opinion is the brand new custom designed and custom built fireplace. We built the mantel and mantel legs from select hardwood and installed grouted tile to the hearth and surround for an extremely durable and awesome looking fireplace that the homeowners will enjoy for many, many years!
Here are some photos showing the completed project, with nice new furniture that homeowner purchased. The homeowner will be putting the finishing touches on this masterpiece with fresh new curtains!
