Before - Breakfast Nook
It's the month of St. Patrick's Day and we're green with envy over this kitchen remodel!! We wanted to (finally!) share the photos of the finished product. It is more beautiful than ever with all of the great original features preserved!
We began with a spacious kitchen with a great layout and a lot of potential. We kept the layout and all of the great windows, and re-purposed/reconfigured other areas to optimize the great space that already existed.
This small room on the back was a great nook for breakfast with windows facing East and South. We kept this as a breakfast hot spot by incorporating cabinets, counter space, a microwave drawer, and a bar sink for breakfast and coffee prep. What's cool is that not only in the morning can this function as a breakfast prep and eating area, but also by night it can function as an additional prep area for big dinner event! Who doesn't love a multi-purpose space???
The homeowners opted to keep this great Tiffany overhead light shade and original built-in shaker cabinets. They fit in well and provide unique accents that add character to the space that is often missing in kitchen remodels these days! With all of the natural light, lighter upper cabinets, and all of the trim and casing in this space, the homeowners felt like they could go with a relatively dark and bolder wall color - which adds so much depth to the space, we love it!
Before - Front Wall
Before, this front wall had a lot of unused space. It had cabinets and drawers. But with a large boiler register in one of the cabinets (to the right), and a mix of original/newer cabinets and shelves, it was not a cohesive space. We took this area apart and went back with a run of cabinets and counter tops. We converted the register to a kick-plate register (to offer a more compact version of the same heat source) which provided more usable cabinet space and room for this great set of extra large drawers. All of the drawer space is one of the cool things about this kitchen! There are seven drawers and three of them are 36" wide...no lack of usable storage space in this kitchen!
To the left of the drawers is a pull-out trash can cabinet, adding floor space by keeping the floor plan open (with no trash can exposed)! Now, let your eyes gaze up at these beautiful glass cabinet doors on the upper cabinets. What a great way to accent the kitchen space with colorful dishes and glasses!

Before and after of built-in refrigerator wall.
Who else is drooling over this custom built-in refrigerator wall? In the before picture, the cabinet to the left used to house a fold-down ironing board! While we're all for having a wrinkle-less appearance, unless you're into ironing your dishtowels (does anyone do that?), a kitchen just isn't the right space for that kind of thing. Instead, we repurposed the space by moving the fridge to the left and adding cabinet space above and to the right of the fridge. Also note how the cabinets above are flush with the front of the refrigerator. What usually ends up being wasted cabinet space in most kitchens is easily accessible here!
Before and after of sink wall.
In what could arguably be the piece de resistance of this kitchen is the sink and stove wall! If you look at the before picture, then the after, then back again, you might find yourself questioning if this is even the same space. With the upper cabinets gone, this area feels very light and airy. Instead of the windows looking like they're making an apology for being in the way, they're now the main focal point! Who doesn't love having a way to look outside while doing the dishes? And check out that sleek countertop! All of the countertops in the kitchen are butcher block with a dark stain applied to them. With the light coming in from the windows, they really shine and rival any granite in our opinion. The dark stain also helps to ground the lower cabinets while allowing the space above to feel light and neutral. We think this adds a more balanced effect to the whole room.
Well, what do you think? Are you just as green with envy as we are? Do you agree that the homeowners who get to use this kitchen every day are pretty lucky? We think so!
